But what does an SOP consultant actually deliver?

An SOP consultant delivers a set of documented standard operating procedures tailored to your business. Depending on the scope, this can include written step-by-step processes, checklists, decision trees, and role-specific guidance. The goal is documentation that's clear enough for a new team member to follow without needing to ask someone every five minutes.

But do I really need SOPs if my team already knows what to do?

If your team "just knows" how things work, that knowledge is fragile. People leave, forget, get sick, or simply do things their own way without realizing it. SOPs capture that knowledge in a form that's transferable and not dependent on any one person. The teams that seem to "just know" are often the ones where a departure or growth push creates the most disruption.

But how is SOP consulting different from operations consulting?

Operations consulting tends to look at the broader structure of how a business runs - strategy, capacity, team design, and workflow at a high level. SOP consulting zooms in on the specific, repeatable processes within that structure and documents them in a usable format. In practice, the two often overlap: it's difficult to write good SOPs without first understanding the operational context they sit in, so Day by Day works on both together to create systems your team can follow.

But how detailed do SOPs need to be?

SOPs need to be detailed enough to remove ambiguity, but not so detailed that no one reads them. The right level of detail depends on the complexity of the process and the experience level of the people following it. We also take into account how much variation is acceptable. A client-facing workflow needs more nuance than an internal admin task. Part of what SOP consulting involves is making that judgment call rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.

But how long does SOP development take?

The length of SOP services needed depends on how many processes you need documented and how complex they are. A focused engagement covering a handful of core workflows might take a few weeks. A broader project across multiple functions or team members will take longer.
